April 18th, 2012

At BlissWood, we have the pleasure of meeting people from all over the United States and the world. It’s amazing to see guests from all walks of life take on the cowboy spirit once they set foot on our 650-acre working ranch.

Earlier this year, we had a couple of guys from New York stay at our Texas guest ranch. When they arrived, they were eager to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a peaceful weekend getaway in the Texas Hill Country.

One of them was nice enough to leave a review for us on BedandBreakfast.com:

What can I say, going to a family run ranch makes all the difference from the personal touch to the quality of care. I highly recommend the ranch to anyone who would like to experience the great outdoors ‘Texas style’! :)

Bluebonnets in bloom at Blisswood

March 29th, 2012
“>

A baby among the bluebonnets. Have Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Skeeter Hagler create portraits of your family among the blooming flowers at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast, a retreat and working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas.

The bluebonnet, as you may know, is the state flower of Texas, but we have so many of them now, it may as well be the official flower of BlissWood, our  vacation ranch just an hour west of Houston.

“Just fields and fields of them,” B&B owner Carol Davis says. “It looks like seas of blue here.”

About all she can do is marvel and suggest you get on over to the ranch and get your picture taken among the blossoms by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Skeeter Hagler, or maybe go horseback riding to soak in the glorious view while the flowers are peaking. Imagine how sweet that would be.

It’s a bumper year, Davis says, and the bluebonnets will be in bloom for about five weeks. Lupinus texensis, the scientific name for the bluebonnets that blanket Central Texas, prompted the late state governor, W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel to sing that “you may be on the plains or the mountains or down where the sea breezes blow, but bluebonnets are one of the prime factors that make the state the most beautiful land that we know.”

Read more about bluebonnets here at Blisswood. And by all means, visit us and see for yourself.

Photo of Our Texas Guest Ranch

We received the following message from a guest who visited our Texas guest ranch just before the end of last year, and we thought we’d share it with you today.

Hello Carol,

We enjoyed your place so much, and have been bragging about our stay ever since. We took some wonderful pictures and one in particular I want to have one of my sisters paint. It is a beautiful sunset with the windmill in the forefront and I have taken the liberty of attaching it in this email.

You and your staff are wonderful and we felt welcome and comfortable in such cared for surroundings.

Once again, thank you for creating such a magical place and I hope we can visit you again in the future.

All the best for the New Year!

Thank you so much to this guest for taking the time to write this email and for the gorgeous photo. It’s always great to hear back from a guest about their experiences at our Texas guest ranch.

Cowboy Photography Workshop in Texas

Spend a weekend on a real, working Texas ranch, photographing cowboys, the ranching life, and a kangaroo.

Join us Friday, October 19th to Sunday, October 21st at Lehmann Legacy Ranch for a weekend cowboy photography workshop led by instructor Skeeter Hagler and Kevin Vandivier from Texas Highways Magazine, the official travel magazine of Texas.

What to Expect

The cowboy photography workshop starts with a social followed by dinner at Carol’s Restaurant in Cat Spring, Texas and a multimedia presentation to prepare you for the weekend.

On Saturday morning, we’ll all meet at the ranch where Skeeter will show us how to choose a location for shooting a cowboy portrait. Everybody will get a chance to snap a few shots too.

Following a chuckwagon breakfast, we’ll head over to a different part of the ranch to take pictures of some of the animals on the ranch—including a live kangaroo.

During the middle of the day, you and your partner will have the opportunity to explore the ranch and shoot photos on your own. We’ll all meet again at sunset for a demonstration on how to shoot a cowboy portrait using a flash.

We’ll end the day with a slideshow of your shots from the day, along with some professional critiques from Skeeter and Kevin on how to make your photos even better.

On Sunday morning, Skeeter will lead us in a photography session where we’ll shoot cowboys working cattle. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy another chuckwagon breakfast and then we’ll all be sent out on assignment to capture some aspects of the ranching life.

Finally, we’ll cap it all off with another slideshow presentation of your shots from the day and critiques on how to make them better.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to direct and photograph cowboys
  • How to select a portrait location
  • What it takes to stand out among your competitors
  • How to critique your photographs
  • Basic lighting for indoor and outdoor portraits

Avoid Stress - Elope in Texas at BlissWood B&B

February 29th, 2012
Elope in TexasPlanning a big wedding is quite possibly the most stressful experience you will ever go through. Why not avoid the stress and elope in Texas instead?

For some people, celebrating their marriage with every family member, friend, co-worker, and acquaintance they can think of is worth the effort and stress that goes into planning a huge party.

But for the rest of us, what we really want is to say our vows in a private, intimate setting.

Any why not? Shouldn’t your wedding be about the two of you, not everybody you’ve ever met?

At BlissWood B&B, we take care of everything so you and your spouse-to-be can relax and enjoy the whole marriage experience in a peaceful country setting.

Check out our Texas Elopement Package for more details. We also offer an Intimate Wedding Package for you and up to six guests.

Here’s what one of our recent guests had to say about her experience at BlissWood:

“If you are looking for a stress-free all inclusive way to elope while still maintaining your privacy this is the way to go. It was like a honeymoon up until and after the wedding ceremony. Plus I got to pet a Kangaroo.”

Stay at a Farm in the Texas Hill Country

February 16th, 2012
Stay at a Farm in the Texas Hill Country

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stay on a working farm in Texas for a vacation? You’re not alone.

Farm stays–or, more broadly, agritourism–are quickly gaining in popularity in North America as more and more vacationers are opting for the unique experiences these farms have to offer their guests.

It’s a chance for people that have never visited a farm to see one for the first time or for people that have been to a farm to revisit and rejuvenate in the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the country.

Whatever the reason, a farm stay may be just what the doctor ordered for you.

What Exactly is a Farm Stay?

A farm stay (or farmstay) is basically any kind of accommodation on a working farm whether it be in cottages, cabins, guest rooms, tents, yurts, and so on. At BlissWood, we offer 10 houses and cabins and six more accommodations at the Oasis.

There are also many different kinds of farm stay experiences. Some are interactive, offering guests the opportunity to feed animals, collect eggs, and learn about the day-to-day operations of a working farm.

And some are meant to be a peaceful and relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast at Lehmann Legacy Ranch in Cat Spring, Texas offers guests the opportunity to do both.

A Unique Farm Stay Experience

Guests of BlissWood Bed and Breakfast are welcome to explore our 650-acre working Texas ranch, participate in feeding animals, and observe the operations of a real working ranch.

Or, if you’ve got relaxation on your mind, you can simply kick back on your private porch and enjoy the fresh country air and wide open spaces of the Texas Hill Country.

At BlissWood, it’s up to you. Call 713-301-3235 today to book your Farm Stay at BlissWood at Lehmann Legacy Ranch and check out our page on Farm Stay U.S., the official guide for farm stays in the United States.

Cabela's Photo Shoot at Our Texas Guest Ranch

February 1st, 2012

Keep your eyes peeled for the summer edition of the Cabela’s catalog. You might recognize the scenery.

The marketing people at Cabela’s happened upon the BlissWood Website when they were searching for a location to photograph models for their summer catalog and fell in love with our Texas guest ranch instantly.

We hosted them for 10 days on the ranch and provided everything they needed to get the most memorable shots for their catalog, including our beautiful scenery, huge liveoaks, and a canoe (which you can now rent at BlissWood)!

We’re absolutely tickled that they chose to use our Texas guest ranch as the backdrop for their summer catalog and can’t wait to see the results.

What is Cabela’s?

In case you didn’t know, Cabela’s is the world’s foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear. They have over 30 stores in the US, including three right here in Texas as well as locations all over the world.

If you’ve ever been to one of their stores, you won’t soon forget the experience.

Think of it like a Disneyland for outdoor sporting enthusiasts. When you walk in the entrance, you’ll see a big hill that looks like the tip of a mountain with animals of various sizes all around it (stuffed, of course) and an aquarium filled with big mouth bass and trout and other game fish (these are the real deal).

We couldn’t show you any of the pictures we took with the models in them (you’ll have to wait for the summer catalog to see those), but here are a few behind-the-scene shots for you to enjoy.

* Photography by Pulitzer Prize-winner Skeeter Hagler, www.skeeterhagler.net

Remember to look for this year’s summer catalog for the official shots taken at our Texas guest ranch!
