Newborn calf and miniature donkey at our Texas guest ranch

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Calf Born on Texas Guest RanchWe were fortunate enough to celebrate Christmas this year with a special delivery from our very own Lehmann Legacy Ranch. On Christmas day, an adorable newborn “Black Baldy” calf was born.

Newborn “Black Baldy” Calf

A Black Baldy is a cross between a Hereford cow (dad) and a solid black breed, in this case, an Angus (mom). They are characterized by a white face similar to the Hereford and a black body like the Angus.

Black Baldy cows are known for their mothering abilities and other exceptional qualities brought on by hybrid vigor including black skin which protects the bare skin on the udder of the cow from sunburn.

And as anybody that’s been to our Texas guest ranch knows, we have no shortage of sun.

Newborn miniature donkey

The Black Baldy isn’t the only newborn we’ve had running around the ranch lately. Just a week prior, Carol received an early Christmas present from the ranch, a miniature female donkey named Cabella.

Miniature donkeys were originally developed on Sicily and Sardinia in the Mediterranean but are almost completely extinct there now.

If not for North American breeders, the miniature donkey may have gone extinct years ago. However, ever since the breed was introduced to the U.S. and Canada in the early 1990s, the number of miniature donkeys has remained strong and increasing.

What a great time of year to welcome new life into the world!

As we start the new year, we’ll sure be busy around here watching over our new additions.

Pets Welcome - Pet Friendly Bed and Breakfast

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast, we would be pleased to welcome your pet to our central Texas guest ranch.

We know how hard it is to leave a cherished part of the family behind on vacation so we’ve worked to make BlissWood B&B a welcoming place for most pets.

We only ask that you make arrangements with us prior to your stay because we do charge an additional fee for furry companions. And, as a side note, Lehmann Legacy Ranch is a real working ranch with a wide assortment of animals, including a family of domesticated dogs. Sometimes, ranch animals and pets don’t mix well. If your pet doesn’t get along with other animals very well, you might want to consider finding it a sitter back home. We want you and your pet to have a relaxing, fun stay at BlissWood.

During your stay at Lehmann Legacy Ranch, we ask that you please observe the following rules:

  • Keep your pet on a leash at all times (except when you’re in your room).
  • Never leave your pet unattended for safety purposes.
  • If your pet relieves itself in the room, let us know right away so we can clean it up and avoid permanent damage.
  • Show other guests kindness by keeping barking to a minimum.
  • Please clean up after your pet.

Follow these simple rules, and your pet will fit right in at our Texas guest ranch.

We look forward to meeting you and your furry companion soon! If you’re ready to make reservations, give us a call at 713-301-3235 and tell us more about your pet.

Relaxing at BlissWood

Allison & Sassy Enjoying the Sunshine

This is Real Puppy Love!  A rare family that epitomizes real family values just ended their weekend at our Texas Guest Ranch.   There is real family love that one can feel when around them–both children wonderfully behaved, parents very caring and loving.  Alexis and Allison, you will be remembered! Allison obviously has this special connection with animals, and Sassy our ranch ambassador, quickly knew this and took advantage of it.   Allison is now famous here at BlissWood, and Sassy awaits her next visit.  Alexis and Allison took advantage of our children’s horseback riding and had a great time with our wonderful weather this weekend.  Upon their return home this evening. Mother Lori wrote:  “We are proud of the girls!  We had a great time this weekend; it was the first time for any of us to visit a ranch (except for school field trips).  We really loved riding our bikes and seeing all the animals up close.  Thank you so much for sending the photos as Allison was in tears that she didn’t see Sassy this morning.  We printed the pictures already.  Allison is taking them to school tomorrow – 1st grade.  It’s a great thing that you have done with Blisswood.”   This is what BlissWood is all about–getting unplugged, relaxing in nature, surrounded by our ranch animals.

The Crotty Family Spends Labor Day at Texas Guest Ranch

Monday, October 19th, 2009

One of the things we like best about running a guest ranch near Houston is that we help create memorable experiences for the folks who stay here. Take the Crotty family, who have been coming to our bed and breakfast ranch for the past four years. Each trip they try something new: a different house, a new experience. This last trip, over Labor Day Weekend, they took the feeding tour – something their seven year old son found delightful. Read their own words:

“We have been going to Blisswood for the past four years, and will continue for years to come. Our son was 3 when we first went there and he still calls it ‘our ranch’. We usually take one or more of our dogs, who all love the new smells and fresh country air. It is a place for us to slow down and reconnect as a family. Being only a little over an hour outside of Houston, it is a world away from the bustle and rush of city living. The new staff are wonderful, too. And if you haven’t eaten at Carol’s restaurant, you are missing a great meal. ”

Pictured below is their son feeding Me-Me the fallow deer and Willie the Camel.

What an experience

There is a special resident of our Texas Guest Ranch – Roger Roo the Kangaroo. What follows is one woman’s experience with Roger that bears repeating.

“January 13th, I drove two hours to beautiful Blisswood. Upon arrival one of the first things that caught my eye was a camel. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing here on the Texas plains! Carol took us around to view a few of the cottages and I was very patient but what I really wanted was to meet this kangaroo. So I finally blurted out…where is the kangaroo?” “Oh”, says Carol, “you want to meet Roger.” Roger! It was the first I had heard his name. A few minutes later Carol comes carrying a big pink diaper bag. She handed me the bag and says, “get him up/ he is napping.” I opened the flap and all I could see was ears, legs and tail. Roger was curled up lying on his back sound asleep. Finally he opened his eyes and slowly crawled out still half asleep and up onto my shoulder like a child waking from a nap and still wanting to be held. Well! It was love at first sight! Roger looked right in my eyes while I talked to him and just let me hold him on my lap…a perfect stranger!

After I left Blisswood (video of Roger in hand), I wanted to tell everyone about Roger. We stopped at a restaurant in San Marcos and told the waitress and several patrons about our Roger adventure, sharing the video much to everyone’s delight and amazement. The next morning I sent Carol a note and thanked her for her hospitality and asked if Roger said anything about me or if he missed me. Carol called to say she enjoyed meeting me as well and that, “You and Roger really did have a special connection.”

Fan Club 3I had to see this special kangaroo again, so I traveled back to Blisswood with my family in August. It was a glorious morning, all of us enjoying Roger and his antics. He clearly recognized me and I got several kisses.

It was hard to leave but we will be back in the Fall. Everyone should have the Roger Roo experience. One you will never forget and will want all your friends and family to enjoy.

Susan Kaye, Ph.D.                                                                                                        President Roger Roo Fan Club”

We love that guests of our Houston area guest ranch have these kinds of experiences. We think it is what sets Blisswood b&b apart.

Texas Bed and Breakfast: Spring is coming!

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

As small flowering bulbs start to poke their heads out of the soil, and the crisp air takes on a welcoming aroma, it becomes more and more apparent: Spring is just around the corner!

Another way we here at Blisswood, the ultimate Texas Weekend Getaway, can tell that Spring is coming, is when our animals tell us. New life is showing up at Lehmann Legacy Ranch!

Here are some great pictures of the new calves in the fields around our Texas Romantic Getaway. We hope you will want to spend some time with us soon!
