The kids can take riding lessons, feed the farm animals, and spend hours exploring our 600-acres. Picnic in the shade of gorgeous live oak trees. “We had heard the kitten early in the morning while sitting out on the porch enjoying our breakfast, but my husband really thought it was just a different type of bird singing. So we didn’t check it out for a while. Then, when I went in to take my shower, I heard it again and asked him to go investigate while I was in the shower. He found it very close to the back of the cabin and came in and held it up over the shower door! I was so surprised!!

We stopped at the feed store in Sealy and got a nursing bottle and some formula for kittens (didn’t even know they had such a thing!). We are feeding it every 3-4 hours. It is getting more alert and even starting to play. It purrs almost non-stop!”

Friends from the Falklands

One of our favorite aspects of running a guest ranch near Houston is all the fantastic people we get to meet. Recently we had some very interesting visitors stay with us for three weeks. They had to stay a while, since they traveled all the way from the Falkland Islands to be here. Sharon and Ken Jaffray learned about our Texas guest ranch from our website, and thought it sounded like the perfect spot to escape from the long winter down off the southeastern tip of South America.

Sharon works as the Deputy Editor at Large for the Penguin News, the Falkland’s only newspaper. The name of the paper illustrates one way that the Falklands differ from central Texas: when was the last time a penguin was seen wandering through the grasslands? The Jaffrays were struck by the endless landscape, and by the friendly and welcoming nature of Texans; this is no small compliment, since we learned that Falklanders themselves have quite a reputation for hospitality. We spent many interesting hours swapping stories about our lives and our cultures, and we hope they’ll come back again. Sharon in particular enjoyed trailriding near Houston.

Our new friends brought a little bit of Texas back with them to the Falkland Islands. You’ll recognize them when you hear them say, “Y’all”!

We have nine vacation-rental style homes on the ranch; each with its own unique appeal. Some, like the Writer’s Cabin, are single bedroom and hidden back among the live oaks to make for a very romantic setting. Others, like the Sullivan House, have three bedrooms and can sleep up to eight.

I’m not sure how much you know about the Hill Country of Texas, but it is an amazingly beautiful area of the state and the nation. We have rolling hills and spring-fed lakes and rivers. In the summer time enjoy cool rains that stir up dust and cool off your skin. Watch lighting roll across the landscape and cuddle with your loved one during the thunder! Right now little Joey (we haven’t picked out a name for him yet) is a lot like a little human baby: he wears diapers and likes to be held often. I carry him in a big diaper bag, to reproduce the experience of a pouch. He just likes to sleep a lot and is extremely cute! People just fall in love with him when they see him! I hope he will get along with the dogs, cats, horses, miniature donkeys, peacocks, bison and camel that already live at Lehmann Legacy Ranch.
