Celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Texas Independence

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Forty nine men gathered together at Washington-on-the-Brazos,Texas on March 1, 1836. They drafted a Declaration of Independence and approved it the next day, on March 2, 1836. Thus was born the Republic of Texas, an independent nation nestled between the United States and Mexico; it lasted until 1846.

See history come to life at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

March 2, 2011, marks the 175th Anniversary of the creation of the Republic of Texas at Washington-on-the-Brazos, abut an hour north of our Cat Spring Texas Bed and Breakfast. This event will be celebrated February 26 and 27, 2011 with a festival at the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Park and free admittance to the Star of the Republic Museum.

Special events include a commemorative program featuring U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, the sharing of some tasty Texas-sized birthday cake, and a performance of The Convention of 1836 by the Navasota Theater Alliance. In addition, there’ll be period re-enactments, performances by living historians, and a variety of craftsmen demonstrating early 19th century crafts.

Many guests of our Cat Spring Texas Bed and Breakfast don’t wander too far off our ranch (after all, with 650-acres to explore, there isn’t really a need to leave). Those who do enjoy poking around local antique shops and exploring the land and history of Central Texas. History buffs will definitely want to leave the confines of the ranch the weekend of February 26, 27, 2011 in order to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Texas Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

More information about the festivities at Washington-on-the-Brazos may be found at the Birthplace of Texas.

Relaxing at BlissWood

Allison & Sassy Enjoying the Sunshine

This is Real Puppy Love!  A rare family that epitomizes real family values just ended their weekend at our Texas Guest Ranch.   There is real family love that one can feel when around them–both children wonderfully behaved, parents very caring and loving.  Alexis and Allison, you will be remembered! Allison obviously has this special connection with animals, and Sassy our ranch ambassador, quickly knew this and took advantage of it.   Allison is now famous here at BlissWood, and Sassy awaits her next visit.  Alexis and Allison took advantage of our children’s horseback riding and had a great time with our wonderful weather this weekend.  Upon their return home this evening. Mother Lori wrote:  “We are proud of the girls!  We had a great time this weekend; it was the first time for any of us to visit a ranch (except for school field trips).  We really loved riding our bikes and seeing all the animals up close.  Thank you so much for sending the photos as Allison was in tears that she didn’t see Sassy this morning.  We printed the pictures already.  Allison is taking them to school tomorrow – 1st grade.  It’s a great thing that you have done with Blisswood.”   This is what BlissWood is all about–getting unplugged, relaxing in nature, surrounded by our ranch animals.

Warm Yourself at our Texas Guest Ranch

Monday, January 31st, 2011

We’ve had some funny weather in Central Texas this winter. Today’s high is in the 70s, and on Friday there may be snow. Crazy. Many Texas just don’t know what to do with temperatures below 50 degrees, but we have a few ideas for guests of our Central Texas Vacation Ranch.

Cold weather can be invigorating if you embrace it. Explore our 650-acre ranch by horseback, riding across open fields and protected oak woodlands. The cool air on your face will make you feel so alive – it’s thrilling, really. After the ride, warm yourself back at your cabin. Several of our Houston Guest Ranch cabins have fireplaces and are well stocked with oak logs from fallen trees around the property. Oak burns hot and long – it will keep your cabin toasty warm and inviting.

The cozy Aloha Cottage.

There is something inherently romantic about snuggling in front of a fire. Experience it for yourself here at our Texas Vacation Cabins, at Blisswood.

Frosty Morning Horseback Ride

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Not a Usual Sight--Frost!

Texas weather is so varied that one day we are wearing shorts, the next day warm jackets.  They say if you are not satisfied with the Texas weather, wait an hour and it will change.  Thus it was at our Texas Guest Ranch this weekend, when Frosty visited us.  It quickly disappeared, but not quick enough, since I had horseback rides with guests and had to really bundle up.   The sun was our friend and it turned out to be quite an enjoyable ride and guests had a memorable experience.

Texas Guest Ranch Strives to make Guests Happy

Monday, November 8th, 2010

From time to time, happy guests of our vacation ranch near Houston write reviews on BedandBreakfast.com or Trip Advisor. We are always thrilled to see that – it means we’ve done our job.

The Happy Goddess with Sassy.

Below is one such review, posted on BedandBreakfast.com. At right is a picture of the guest with our dog Sassy.

“One word: Wow! We chose the Enchanted Cabin for our stay as I wanted something secluded and away from everyone else. This is EXACTLY what we got. In fact, when we drove down the road (with darling little handmade signs) we got to the end and my husband said, “Where is it?” The cabin was so nestled we barely saw it. (more…)

Mother and Daughter Enjoy Time Together at Guest Ranch

Monday, September 27th, 2010

From time to time, guests of our Houston area guest ranch write to tell us about their time here. Below is one such correspondence from Jane and Christine Harrison, a mother and daughter who were recently at Blisswood to celebrate Christine’s 15th birthday.

Christine and a new friend.

“Christine and I had a wonderful time at your place this week. Thanks for sharing! Armando was so kind to us…showing us around and letting Christine help him feed the animals. When we got home she kept asking me if I told people about all the new friends she met…at first I was confused since we were mostly alone there…she meant the animals!!! When we got to take our horseback ride, we were both in heaven…what incredible horses! Cowboy Bob took time to answer her questions and help her understand why her horses are doing some “weird” things here. I’ve had some rotten experiences with horses in my lifetime so it was so nice to have such a positive experience to share with her.

The Log Cabin brought back memories from my childhood in Oklahoma. I had two aunt and uncle couples who lived in log cabins…it was fun to share the memories with Christine.

I teased that I had to put a rope on Christine to get her in the car for the trip home. All she wants to know is how soon we can come back and if we can bring the whole family!”

We love to hear from our guests. Thanks to Christine and Jane for sharing highlights from your Mother/Daughter Weekend with us!

Archery at our Texas Bed and Breakfast

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Archery may be the world’s oldest sport. What started as a clever tool for obtaining food has evolved into an extremely graceful sport (of course, people still bow hunt, as well). Guests of our Houston area bed and breakfast may now hone their archery skills on the ranch.

Pictured below are Matt and Rose, two WWOOFERS from South Africa and New Zealand respectively. Matt’s father owns a competitive archery range in South Africa, and while staying here at our Texas guest ranch, Matt set up a professional archery range for us.

We happily welcome Wwoofers and Workampers here at our Houston ranch. To learn more about these programs, visit WWOOF and Workamper.

A graceful sport.

Escape from Houston to a Blissful Bed and Breakfast

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Read on for a guest review by Lydia. We are so happy she was pleased by her experiences at our Houston area guest ranch.

The trickle of the waterfall gently lulled us to sleep...

“I just had to take the time out to share with you all just how wonderful my experience was of The Blisswood Ranch B&B in CatSpring, Texas. I live nearby in Houston, Texas and have a hard time finding something so wonderful and so close to home. It was only 60 miles from my front door, and I walked into an Oasis (literally) at this beautiful Bed & Breakfast Ranch Site. On our visit we were greeted by wonderful Emily, who walked us through to our suite. There were chocolate covered strawberries and champagne waiting our arrival. (more…)
