Friends of BlissWood: Friends of the Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge

Friday, February 14th, 2014

We’re lucky to be part of a wonderful community here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. As a working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas, we have a great appreciation for the land and all the creatures who reside here. That’s why we’re so happy to partner with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge for the “Discover Your Prairie Neighbors” art contest!

Just 25 minutes from BlissWood, the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Refuge is one of the last remaining places to find the endangered prairie chicken. The Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge does excellent work in the community, providing opportunities that call attention to the prairie and all the species that call it home. They do great things for the community – animals and people alike. Through outreach and education, they work hard to preserve and restore the beautiful coastal prairie for all of us and for future generations.

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is pleased to team up with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge as a proud sponsor of the 2nd Annual Discover your Prairie Neighbors art contest. The contest is a fun opportunity for kids of all ages to learn more about the natural environment in Texas while also getting a chance to explore their creative side. The contest will be open through March 1st, 2014. Students at every level, from kindergarten to grade 12 in Brazos ISD, Columbus ISD, Rice CISD, and Sealy ISD, are encouraged to participate.

And if you’re looking for some inspiration, we’d love for parents and teachers to check out the lessons in the Kid Zone. Our hope is that your students will learn more about the prairie and its wildlife, which will, in turn, result in a greater appreciation for our environment and wildlife. We hope this art contest serves as inspiration to learn about the prairie and to have some fun with art!

For more information and contest rules, check out the entry forms available online. Have fun and get coloring!

Dinner Theater at BlissWood: Southern Fried Chickie

Friday, February 7th, 2014

Next month, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast and Carol’s at Cat Spring Restaurant are pleased to be hosting a fabulous night of dinner theater. On March 1st, Christy McBrayer will appear to perform her hilarious one-woman show, Southern Fried Chickie. It’s going to be a fun-filled night complete with good Southern food, of course. You’ll even get to enjoy music, provided by her band, The Redneck Greek Chorus! If you’re looking for some fun Houston dinner theater, this is a totally one-of-a-kind event that you won’t want to miss.

Southern Fried Chickie might be a one-woman show, but you may forget that it is when Christy McBrayer begins to tell her story about a struggling Southern actress’ prodigal trip from Hollywood to Tupelo, Mississippi. Throughout the performance she’ll become 10 different characters in all. She’s a woman of many talents, to say the least!

Christy McBrayer has performed Southern Fried Chickie in New Orleans as well as Austin, Texas. And we’re thrilled that she’s bringing some Southern fun here to Cat Spring, Texas. We can’t wait!

You might say that we ‘discovered’ Christy McBrayer here at BlissWood. We met her last fall when she was a guest celebrating her birthday with us. After hearing about her act, we thought it would be great if she could return one day as a performer. Now, it’s finally happening! So join us for a delightful dinner and an unforgettable show!

Tickets for the show and dinner are $59.00 per person. And just in case you were wondering, yes, we’ll be having Southern fried chicken! (How could we resist?) Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. and the show will follow at 7:00 p.m. You can make your reservations for Southern Fried Chickie by e-mailing carol@blisswood.net. Or just give us a call at 713-301-3235. Hope to see you at the theater!

Host a Dinner at Carol’s Restaurant!

Monday, December 23rd, 2013

If you’re looking for a great location to host a special dinner or event, Carol’s at Cat Spring Restaurant is available for private parties. Whether you’re planning a rehearsal dinner or a corporate event, Carol’s is a great venue for parties in Houston. It’s a fine dining experience in a casual country setting.

When it comes to finding a dinner venue in the Houston area, our location in Cat Spring, Texas is a real hidden gem. We provide a unique setting for any event. You’ll find our secluded property less than an hour from Houston. But when you’re here, you’ll feel like you’re worlds away from a big city. You’ll get the opportunity to enjoy a true Texas experience at our restaurant. The lodge-like atmosphere is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion with a fine steak and a good bottle of wine.

Last month, we had the pleasure of hosting a Vintner’s Dinner with Truchard Winery. Truchard Winery is a small, family-owned winery in the the Carneros region of Napa Valley. Native Texans Tony and Joanne Truchard have been making wine in Northern California since 1989.  With 400 acres of land and 280 acres of vineyards, the Truchards have made a name for themselves in Napa, so we’re always delighted to see them for their annual wine dinner. Carol’s Restaurant was packed with guests who enjoyed the 5-course meal and Truchard wine pairings. Guest Chef Edgar’s menu was a huge success! And, of course, the wine was a hit.

Carol’s will also open for your private parties at the restaurant on any night we are not regularly open. So just ask! And while we might be a hidden gem, you’ll be glad you found us. Give us a call today to make reservations or to start planning your own private party!

Couples of all ages come to BlissWood Bed and Breakfast at Lehmann Legacy Ranch to relax, unwind, rekindle the romance – perhaps even renew their vows — in the peaceful surroundings of our rooms and guesthouses, located on a 650-acre working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas.

Some couples like to leave the planning to us and splurge on BlissWood’s anniversary package ($159, plus the price of lodging). Consider it a second honeymoon. The package includes fresh flowers; a bottle of champagne (plus keepsake glasses); cheese and crackers; chocolate-dipped strawberries; and a catered picnic in our Gazebo at Enchanted Lake.

BlissWood guests celebrating wedding anniversaries can schedule a photo shoot with our official photographer, Skeeter Hagler.

For an additional $75, this couple who celebrated their anniversary at our guest ranch made lasting anniversary memories by scheduling a photo shoot with Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Skeeter Hagler, BlissWood’s official photographer.

They enjoyed a relaxing anniversary and weekend in Texas Hill Country and took the time to post a review of BlissWood Bed and Breakfast on Bedandbreakfast.com:

“What a special place…and just an hour outside of Houston! If you like spending time outside, you will love this place. We celebrated our anniversary here and couldn’t have asked for a better place to do so. It was very quiet, quaint, and peaceful.

“Just roaming around the ranch was wonderful, but the highlights of our trip were dinner at Carol’s Restaurant, the morning horseback ride and the unbelievable photo shoot with Skeeter (Hagler). …The staff was helpful and engaging and made us feel right at home. We enjoyed great conversation with both Carol and Skeeter. What a special group of people they are. We just can’t wait to go back!’’

We look forward to welcoming  couples celebrating anniversaries and other life milestones and special occasions to our bed and breakfast inn. Let us help YOU plan a special Hill Country getaway. Visit our website or give us a call at 713-301-3235.

The Round Top Antiques Fair began 44 years ago when Miss Emma Lee Turney and her business, Antique Productions, were asked to put on an antique show in the tiny town of Round Top, Texas: population 77.

The show was an immediate success and soon people from all over Texas were making the trip to Round Top every Spring and Fall. What was once a single show has spread to four towns—Round Top, Warrenton, Carmine, and Shelby—and includes about 35 separate shows and at least 2,500 merchants, according to the Round Top Register.
