A B&B Inn, Wedding and Event Retreat, and working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas.
Blisswood Bed and Breakfast at Lehmann Legacy Ranch.
We’re happy to report that spring is in full swing at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch! And now that we’re enjoying some warmer temperatures, we’re also seeing a beautiful crop of bluebonnets on the ranch. All the rain we’ve had this year has certainly paid off! Plan your visit to Texas Hill Country and we’ll show you some of the best wildflowers in Texas.
Named for their color and, some say, a likeness to the bonnets worn by pioneer women, the bluebonnet is the official state flower of Texas. The bluebonnet was designated the official state flower in 1901. However, the original legislation mentioned only the species of lupinus subcarnosus. 70 years later it was amended to include lupinus texensis as well as “any other variety of bluebonnet not heretofore recorded.” That means that all species of bluebonnets are considered our state flower. There are currently at least 5 species of bluebonnets growing in Texas, so you might say that we have a whole bouquet of state flowers. It just goes to show that Texans take our bluebonnets very seriously!
The bluebonnet is a lovely harbinger of spring here in Texas. They often begin to bloom in early March. And once they do, you won’t have trouble spotting them in fields and along the highways in central and south Texas. Even our Department of Transportation works to help maintain and protect the iconic flowers.
If you enjoy nature photography, spring is a wonderful time to plan a trip to Texas Hill Country. Grab your camera and join us at BlissWood! And if you’re planning a spring wedding for next year, just imagine the gorgeous pictures you could take with a backdrop of bluebonnets.
Bluebonnet season usually lasts through April. Give us a call at 713-301-3235 and we’ll tell you if they’re still in bloom!

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch provides an intimate setting for a lovely country wedding. Our quiet location in Cat Spring, Texas is the perfect place for a rustic, elegant wedding. Just imagine your big day with a backdrop of sweeping meadows, wildflowers, and a sparkling lake.
When you plan a wedding, you want a venue that will photograph well. BlissWood is the absolute ideal setting for your outdoor wedding photography. We have a wonderful variety of locations and different types of scenery on our ranch. Here, brides can choose from intimate gardens, romantic vineyards, and lush meadows.
We have a long tradition of weddings here at BlissWood. The Enchanted Lake and gazebo were designed with a wedding in mind. We believe it was all built in preparation for the wedding of a previous owner’s daughter. And today, it’s one of our most popular wedding locations. Many couples choose to say their vows at the gazebo on the Enchanted Lake.
We also do weddings in our gardens and at our nearby tropical Oasis. There’s a lot that goes into planning a wedding, and there’s a lot to consider when choosing a venue. Our owner, Carol Davis, was recently featured in an online article about turning your property into a wedding venue. Check it out if you’re interested in all that goes into hosting a wedding!
And if you’re interested in having your wedding at BlissWood, give us a call today at 713-301-3235. We’d love to tell you more and make plans to show you around!
Extra! Extra! Read all about us! We’ve always known that we’re one of the hidden gems in Texas, but it’s nice to get a little recognition from the media. We’re so pleased to be featured in a story about Cat Spring, Texas in the upcoming issue of Texas Highways magazine. Writer Stephen Dean paid a visit to our ranch and you can read all about his experience in the April issue of Texas Highways.
Mr. Dean stayed in the Oasis Retreat, our tropical getaway within a country getaway. The Oasis at BlissWood houses a variety of cottages, suites, and rooms. It’s also home to our greenhouses and orchid gardens. When you stay at the Oasis, you get to experience two very different sides of BlissWood. Located just down the road from our main ranch, the Oasis has a totally different feel with its more modern, Asian aesthetic. It’s hard to believe you’re still in Texas Hill Country!
And when you stay at BlissWood’s Oasis, you can still enjoy all the activities our ranch has to offer. Guests of the Oasis leave their tropical retreat and join us for horseback riding, bass fishing, and even skeet shooting! It’s truly a getaway like none other!
Of course, when Mr. Dean was here, we wanted him to see all sides of BlissWood. He stayed in the Cherry Blossom Suite, but we made sure he saw the entire property. Skeeter Hagler, our resident photographer, did the honor of showing him around. Because it’s not a complete visit to BlissWood unless you meet the animals! They said hello to the Paso Fino horses as well as our bison, alpaca, miniature donkeys, and antelope.
And dinner at Carol’s Restaurant is a must for any visitor. Stephen joined us for a friendly dinner where he got a home-cooked meal and plenty of great conversation. Carol’s at Cat Spring is the ideal setting for kicking back, chatting with some locals, and enjoying a fine meal in a laid-back atmosphere.
Check out the magazine and get inspired to plan your own visit to BlissWood!
2014 has been an awfully cold and snowy winter for most of the country. And even BlissWood hasn’t been totally immune to this year’s weird winter weather! Our normally sunny ranch in Cat Spring, Texas joined in on the meteorological madness just last week.
We were pretty sure that we had seen the last of Old Man Winter, but he showed his face one more time. (Or at least we hope it was the last time!) On a day that started out at a beautiful 74 degrees in the morning, the winds changed quickly as the temperature dropped an astonishing 40 degrees by late afternoon! But it wasn’t just the cold that hit us hard. By the next morning everything on the ranch was coated in ice!
The blooms of our flowering trees were all covered in sparkling ice. And while it’s not the type of weather we usually hope for, it certainly made for a beautiful winter wonderland. We’re glad we got some good pictures of the storm because the next day it was all gone! Maybe it was just a reminder to beware Mother Nature.
But it looks like spring is in the air at BlissWood now! And we’re glad, because that means more sunny days for enjoying the great outdoors here on the ranch. With all the winter weather behind us, it’s time to get out and enjoy all the simple pleasures that BlissWood has to offer. For us, spring means nature walks, hiking, biking, fishing, and picnics. We’re even beginning to see bluebonnets popping up all over the pastures. Some of them are already starting to peek out!
If you’re ready to spring into Spring, plan a trip to BlissWood! You can check availability online or just give us a call at 713-301-3235. We’ll be happy to help you start the season off right!

Like any great photographer, Skeeter sees the details that turn a good picture into a work of art. And there are so many great details to capture at a BlissWood wedding. The glow of a sunset on the Enchanted Lake. The picturesque gazebo. A bouquet of wildflowers. A country road off in the distance. A canopy of old oak trees. Your first kiss.

We’re lucky to be part of a wonderful community here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. As a working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas, we have a great appreciation for the land and all the creatures who reside here. That’s why we’re so happy to partner with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge for the “Discover Your Prairie Neighbors” art contest!
Just 25 minutes from BlissWood, the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Refuge is one of the last remaining places to find the endangered prairie chicken. The Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge does excellent work in the community, providing opportunities that call attention to the prairie and all the species that call it home. They do great things for the community – animals and people alike. Through outreach and education, they work hard to preserve and restore the beautiful coastal prairie for all of us and for future generations.
BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is pleased to team up with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge as a proud sponsor of the 2nd Annual Discover your Prairie Neighbors art contest. The contest is a fun opportunity for kids of all ages to learn more about the natural environment in Texas while also getting a chance to explore their creative side. The contest will be open through March 1st, 2014. Students at every level, from kindergarten to grade 12 in Brazos ISD, Columbus ISD, Rice CISD, and Sealy ISD, are encouraged to participate.
And if you’re looking for some inspiration, we’d love for parents and teachers to check out the lessons in the Kid Zone. Our hope is that your students will learn more about the prairie and its wildlife, which will, in turn, result in a greater appreciation for our environment and wildlife. We hope this art contest serves as inspiration to learn about the prairie and to have some fun with art!
For more information and contest rules, check out the entry forms available online. Have fun and get coloring!
Next month, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast and Carol’s at Cat Spring Restaurant are pleased to be hosting a fabulous night of dinner theater. On March 1st, Christy McBrayer will appear to perform her hilarious one-woman show, Southern Fried Chickie. It’s going to be a fun-filled night complete with good Southern food, of course. You’ll even get to enjoy music, provided by her band, The Redneck Greek Chorus! If you’re looking for some fun Houston dinner theater, this is a totally one-of-a-kind event that you won’t want to miss.
Southern Fried Chickie might be a one-woman show, but you may forget that it is when Christy McBrayer begins to tell her story about a struggling Southern actress’ prodigal trip from Hollywood to Tupelo, Mississippi. Throughout the performance she’ll become 10 different characters in all. She’s a woman of many talents, to say the least!
Christy McBrayer has performed Southern Fried Chickie in New Orleans as well as Austin, Texas. And we’re thrilled that she’s bringing some Southern fun here to Cat Spring, Texas. We can’t wait!
You might say that we ‘discovered’ Christy McBrayer here at BlissWood. We met her last fall when she was a guest celebrating her birthday with us. After hearing about her act, we thought it would be great if she could return one day as a performer. Now, it’s finally happening! So join us for a delightful dinner and an unforgettable show!
Tickets for the show and dinner are $59.00 per person. And just in case you were wondering, yes, we’ll be having Southern fried chicken! (How could we resist?) Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. and the show will follow at 7:00 p.m. You can make your reservations for Southern Fried Chickie by e-mailing email@example.com. Or just give us a call at 713-301-3235. Hope to see you at the theater!
You’ll find a wide variety of options if you want to get away in Texas. We all have our own idea of the perfect escape. People choose to stay at BlissWood because we’re different. We’re a working cattle ranch as well as a beautiful B&B. BlissWood is the place to go for a unique ranch vacation in Texas.
There aren’t many inns where you have the option to do a little trapshooting. But that’s just one of the many onsite activities we offer here at BlissWood. And you’d probably get yourself kicked out of some B&Bs if you started throwing tomahawks! Not here. We offer a totally unique experience at BlissWood. And that’s what our guests love about their visits.
In addition to trapshooting and tomahawk throwing, you’ll find lots of other activities including horseback riding, archery, bass fishing, biking, and more. There’s never a dull moment at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. From hiking and biking to animal feeding, we offer a totally one of a kind experience.
