“Saddle Up!” and Bring Your Horse to Cat Spring, Texas

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

Horse lovers, it’s time to saddle up and go on a different adventure! You and your horse are tired of the same old scenery, so why not beat the boredom of your familiar surroundings and enjoy a vacation fit for human and horse alike?

If an equestrian vacation package sounds like sweet music to your ears (and with a whinny of approval from your hooved companion), then the folks at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch have just the thing for equestrians of all ages and skill levels. A horseback riding vacation in the beautiful Texas Hill country on a 500-acre ranch, located an hour West of Houston.

Horse Riding Classes Texas

BYOH (Bring Your Own Horse)! If you don’t have your own horse to bring along, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch has all the horses you need for group rides and lessons. Our Texas ranch also features boarding accommodations for guests, as well as an all-inclusive horseback riding vacation package.

Our equestrian heritage traces back to the 1830’s, when settlers made the first resemblance of a ranch. By the early 1900’s, it has been an operating ranch, even upon being sold to the owner of an energy company, who developed the property as a Brangus ranch in the 1970’s.

What is BYOH?

You and your favorite riding buddy can enjoy miles of trails at our working ranch, with a complete package that includes two-nights of boarding for one horse, the use of riding trails each day, a daily picnic lunch, access to a fire pit for evening cookouts, one delicious barbecue dinner with a ribeye steak dinner, and setup for horseshoes. Here is a breakdown:

Boarding for one horse 2 nights*

  • Use of Riding Trails every day
  • Firepit each night
  • BBQ Dinner one evening
  • Ribeye steak dinner one evening
  • Picnic lunch each day
  • Horseshoes set up

This two-night package is $199 per person, plus the cost of accommodations (two-night minimum requirement). Booking a package is as easy as calling 1-713-301-3235.

Have Horse, Will Travel

Horse boarding for guests bringing their favorite equine companion along for the ride costs $35 per night, per horse. That includes a private paddock and loafing shed. Owners must provide their own feed, produce required veterinary documents, and sign a boarding agreement. Travel to Texas for a real riding vacation, whether you have a horse or ride one of ours!

Cat Spring, TX Ranch You don’t have to have a horse or even be an equestrian enthusiast to enjoy a picnic lunch at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. A guide will take you to your own picnic site alongside BlissWood’s private lake. Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature while relaxing and enjoying a delicious meal. A golf cart will be available to return you to your lodging quarters. The cost is $189 per couple plus cost of accommodations.

Consider a Different Kind Trip this Spring :: Spring Break in Texas

Wednesday, March 11th, 2015

Whenever the words “Spring Break,” are mentioned, most people think of destinations like Las Vegas, or Florida cities like Daytona Beach, Sanibel Island or Miami Beach. Foreign locations like Cancun, the Virgin Islands or the Bahamas also seem appealing for those who want a reprieve from the cold weather or hard-hitting snow storms we’ve had this season.

Those are great, but…

There is a new trend in spring break vacationing. Locations like Fort Lauderdale have given way to modern hot spots such as South Padre Island, Texas, California and other lesser-known destinations. Some people don’t want to fight the crowds at the airport or to go through the hassles of traveling to these temperate climates. In Texas, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch makes for a wicked fun vacation without breaking the bank, and without worrying about wearing extra layers of sunscreen.

Family vacations in Texas

Sure, we get our fair share of hot weather. Just west of Houston BlissWood Bed and Breakfast offers plenty of fun activities for those who enjoy a less populated spring break destination. Tranquility, peace and lots of outdoor activities make this a really fun place to visit.

Sure, South Padre is ranked by many magazines and online travel blogs as the current No. 1 Spring Break destination, but if you’re looking for more than beer, booze, boys, babes and beaches, look about an hour west of Houston to a little town called Cat Spring. Our big vacation ranch offers a lot more bang for your college student buck. Or if you have a family, the last thing you want to do is bring the little ones to a place where the college kids are going.

Your kids will remember this spring break forever. Make it a tradition!

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch sounds quaint and small, but this working ranch boasts 500 acres of activities, history, excitement, fun, luxury, and plenty of fuel for lasting memories.

Start with a natural, outdoor-free range zoo where visitors can see (and get up close and even pet in some cases), diverse animals including miniature donkeys, goats, fallow deer, Black Buck antelopes, peacocks, cattle, bison, horses, and other animals and birds too numerous to list. Let’s just say that if your kids love animals, they will love our ranch. This is also an ideal region to hike, bike, nature walk, or just take in the sights faster by renting a golf cart.

Looking for more ‘active’ activities? How about mountain and trail cycling, hiking, archery, bass fishing, trap shooting, horseback riding, guided tours, golfing, and even hot air balloon rides.Dude Ranch near Houston

When it comes to lodging, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is on par with the finest four-and five-star hotels in the country, offering nine various types of accommodations. From the small and simple one-bedroom, enchanted cabin that sleeps a party of three, to several Oasis bungalows or suites sleeping two, our smaller accommodations are “just right.” If your family or group of friends needs a bigger space, the spacious four-bedroom Lehman house holds as many as eight. Plus, we have a three-bedroom ranch studio that can sleep as many as eight, or the two-suite, dog trot house which can comfortably sleep ten. There are many other options in between; including the two-bedroom Texas farmhouse, the two-bedroom log cabin, the Bluebonnet Bungalow, and the newly-added garden cottage. Lodging ranges in price from $149 to $419.

Food is another added plus, as Carol’s Restaurant stresses casual dress, while providing “fashionably classy” food including steak, pasta, seafood and chicken. Carol’s offers several ‘signature dishes’ that you won’t find anywhere else, which gives your Spring Break an extra special touch. It’s not surprising that Carol’s — despite being in the “middle of nowhere” has gained national notoriety, popularity, and raves from many food critics, magazines and blog writers.

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is very close to two state parks — Stephen F. Austin and Washington-on-the-Brazos — and several historical and cultural attractions as well as many antique shops. So you can make your Spring Break very educational for the kids, as well!

Before booking a traditional Spring Break trip with four-to-six-people crammed in a hotel room near a noisy, jam-packed beach, take a look at BlissWood. Just as the name suggests, our location is decidedly different, and a great value for the endearing memories it will bring. You can even bring your Furry Family, since BlissWood is Pet Friendly!  Book a stay with us by calling 713-301-3235 to check with us on dates and availability.

Welcoming Great New Friends from Near and Far for Our Dude Ranch Adventures

A couple of months back, we had the absolute pleasure of having a guest from Malaysia who came to stay with us at Blisswood Bed & Breakfast. His son was getting married in South Texas, so his future daughter-in-law made special reservations to give her new father-in-law a real Texas experience. Our Malaysian visitor had a great time horseback riding, axe throwing, firing off a few rounds on the shooting range, and of course relaxing at our authentic Texas ranch.

The package his family reserved for him was part of our Dude Ranch Adventure Package, which is a great way for anyone to come stay in Texas and experience life as it should be on an authentic Texas ranch setting. The Dude Ranch Adventure includes horseback riding, a tour of the barn, trapshooting, archery, and a Tomahawk throwing lesson. It feels good to be out in the fresh air on our 650-acre ranch, even if you’re just visiting from nearby Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and other cities in Texas, or much further, such as our new friend from Malaysia.

South Texas Getaways

While he was here, our guest also dined at Carol’s at Cat Spring Restaurant, where he was treated to a Texas BBQ dinner unlike anything he had ever tasted before. Oh yes, we gave him a “taste” of the Texas Wild West! Turns out, most everyone has a cowboy hiding somewhere down inside of their soul somewhere.

Stetson the Sochi Street Dog

Friday, June 20th, 2014

We love animals here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. We have a whole host of animals who live here and BlissWood owner, Carol Davis, does great work to help animals in Texas with All Border Collie Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to finding forever homes for Border Collies.

If you remember the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia earlier this year, you probably recall hearing about their street dogs. Sochi’s abundance of stray dogs made the news during the Games, when authorities began rounding up and killing dogs. When the world caught wind of this terrible development, a number of animal rights groups stepped in to help save the dogs of Sochi.

Many Olympians joined in with the rescue efforts, taking home dogs themselves. Web sites popped up urging people around the world to help and save lives by adopting a dog from Sochi.

Carol Davis found Dog #153 on one such site. The site described him as a beautiful dog with a great personality. Many of his canine buddies from the streets of Sochi had already been rounded up and killed, but Dog #153 was caught by an animal rescue group. Carol took action and began the adoption process. It was a long process – it took months to make the arrangements and help from people on both ends but, in the end it all worked out for the best.

This lovable pup is now a world traveler. He finally made it all the way from Sochi, Russia to Houston, Texas. When all was said and done, he had flown 7,000 miles before arriving at Houston Intercontinental Airport.

Dog 153 is no longer a number. Now he goes by the name Stetson and he’s adjusted quite well to ranch life in Texas! Stetson is having a great time exploring the 600 acre ranch here at BlissWood and enjoying life. He’s one lucky dog!

Spring Calving Season at BlissWood

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

Blisswood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is more than your average B&B. We offer one-of-a-kind Texas guest ranch vacations here in Cat Spring, Texas. And as a working ranch, we’re also home to lots of animals, big and small. At this time of year, it seems like every time we turn around, we’re home to one more! Now that it’s spring, the baby calves are arriving.

Who can resist snapping some pictures of a mom with a newborn? Our resident photographer Skeeter Hagler managed to capture this special moment just after the birth of one of our calves.

Our owner, Carol Davis, has been raising cattle for years. In addition to Angus and Angus crossbreeds, she also raises American Bison here at BlissWood.

With over 650 acres, we have plenty of room for all kinds of beautiful creatures. And we do have all kinds. As well as common barnyard animals like cattle and chickens, you might also see black buck antelope, potbellied pigs, fallow deer, alpaca, and miniature donkeys. And if you take a stroll around the ranch, you’ll probably even come across a peacock or two.

When you stay at our Texas ranch, you have the chance to meet many of our animals on the morning feeding tour. The tour is open to all guests and it’s a unique treat for any animal lover. All Border Collie Rescue

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

At BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch, animals are a big part of everyday life. You might say we have more than our fair share of them! We’re home to chickens, bison, antelope, fallow deer, potbellied pigs, peacocks, alpaca, and miniature donkeys. And in addition to all of those fine creatures, you’ll often find us with a Border Collie or two. (Or more.) But they don’t belong to us – we’re just helping out some of the sweet rescue dogs in Texas.

We’re proud to work with All Border Collie Rescue, caring for dogs in transition as they look for permanent homes. All Border Collie Rescue was founded in 2008, and in its first year in operation, it found homes for 25 lovable pups. Now, just a few years later, that number is reaching into the hundreds! At BlissWood, we’re happy to help as much and as often as we can.

All Border Collie Rescue is a volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue of Border Collies. They help to find homes for dogs from shelters throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and other neighboring states. They work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and match Border Collies with families who are right for them.

And we’ve got some wonderful news! Just last weekend one of our foster Border Collies was adopted! To celebrate the momentous occasion, we went out to take some photos in the bluebonnets. As you can see, Border Collies aren’t just smart – they’re photogenic too.

Ruby the Border Collie found a new home!

When you visit BlissWood, you might just end up bonding with some of our available fosters. If you’ve never met a Border Collie, you should know that they’re very smart and they learn quickly. A Border Collie makes for a great companion. They’re loyal to their owners and very capable, if you train them well. If you think there’s a chance that a Border Collie might fit into your life, please consider a rescue. They’re especially good pets for folks with active households.

Plan a visit to BlissWood today! You won’t necessarily leave with a new pet, but you never know…

Winter Weather at BlissWood!

Thursday, March 13th, 2014

2014 has been an awfully cold and snowy winter for most of the country. And even BlissWood hasn’t been totally immune to this year’s weird winter weather! Our normally sunny ranch in Cat Spring, Texas joined in on the meteorological madness just last week.

We were pretty sure that we had seen the last of Old Man Winter, but he showed his face one more time. (Or at least we hope it was the last time!) On a day that started out at a beautiful 74 degrees in the morning, the winds changed quickly as the temperature dropped an astonishing 40 degrees by late afternoon! But it wasn’t just the cold that hit us hard. By the next morning everything on the ranch was coated in ice!

ice 3

The blooms of our flowering trees were all covered in sparkling ice. And while it’s not the type of weather we usually hope for, it certainly made for a beautiful winter wonderland. We’re glad we got some good pictures of the storm because the next day it was all gone! Maybe it was just a reminder to beware Mother Nature.

But it looks like spring is in the air at BlissWood now! And we’re glad, because that means more sunny days for enjoying the great outdoors here on the ranch. With all the winter weather behind us, it’s time to get out and enjoy all the simple pleasures that BlissWood has to offer. For us, spring means nature walks, hiking, biking, fishing, and picnics. We’re even beginning to see bluebonnets popping up all over the pastures. Some of them are already starting to peek out!

If you’re  ready to spring into Spring, plan a trip to BlissWood! You can check availability online or just give us a call at 713-301-3235. We’ll be happy to help you start the season off right!

Catch Some Fun (and Fish) at BlissWood!

Thursday, August 15th, 2013

We love summer, and it’s not over yet!  We have fun all year long at BlissWood Bed & Breakfast Ranch, but there’s nothing like a warm summer day for relaxing at the lake, enjoying a picnic, or playing some disc golf.  At BlissWood, we combine a real B&B experience with all the action of a family resort. You can have tons of fun at our Texas inn fishing, biking, and more. So if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway and great onsite activities, come on down to Cat Spring, Texas and pay us a visit!

When you stay with us, you might want to pack your bicycle. The ranch has plenty of room and easy terrain for a leisurely bike ride. You can even explore the nearby country roads if you want a longer ride. We also offer bicycle rentals here for just 35 dollars a day.  Of course, there’s no charge if you bring your own wheels!

And for many of us, nothing says summer like relaxing by the water and whiling away the hours with a fishing pole in hand. If that sounds like your idea of a perfect day, you’ll enjoy some catch-and-release bass fishing in our stocked lakes.  Again, we can supply the gear, or you can go ahead and bring your own.

Texas inn fishing

Just the other week, a couple of our guests had an exciting day at the lake! This big bass tried to get away – he squirmed right off the hook. But that didn’t stop these determined young fishermen.  One of them actually jumped in the water and caught him by hand!  We’re glad he did, because it made for an excellent photo op and fun memories!

If you’re interested in booking your own fun-filled getaway, you can check availability online or just give us a call at 713-301-3235.  We look forward to hearing from you!

The Buzz at Our Texas Guest Ranch

Monday, July 15th, 2013

We’re preparing for our first harvest here at BlissWood, but it’s not the usual crop. Just when you thought BlissWood couldn’t get any sweeter, we’re getting ready] to harvest honey! Of course, we can’t take all the credit – we’ve got a hive of hard-working bees here. And if all goes well, we’ll soon have fresh honey available on our Texas guest ranch.

Thousands of years ago in ancient Rome, the historian Pliny the Elder called honey the finest, most health-promoting liquid known to man. It’s hard to believe, but honey does have many proven health benefits. We all know that it’s a tasty natural sweetener, but it’s more than just a sweet treat. Honey contains 18 amino acids, as well as many vitamins and minerals.

Honey is also believed to improve sleep and relaxation and naturally reduce allergy symptoms. It’s even used to heal cuts and scrapes!  With all these fantastic properties, it’s no wonder that beekeeping is becoming such a popular pastime!

Texas guest ranch

It’s a tricky business, but our beekeeper here on the ranch is a pro. Paul Casteig from Royal Ridge Honey knows that in order to produce the best quality honey, it is never heated or filtered during harvest.  And it’s always hand-packed in glass containers and never in plastic.

And to ensure the most natural product, our bees’ territory is free of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, genetically modified crops, and anything else that Mother Nature herself would not approve of.  That’s how we know that you won’t find a purer specimen of the golden food anywhere.

So if you’re looking for a sweet getaway, consider planning a trip to BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch.  In addition to a relaxing stay at our beautiful Texas guest ranch, you might even get to see the hive in action!  Call us today at 713-301-3235 or check availability online.
