Stetson the Sochi Street Dog

Friday, June 20th, 2014

We love animals here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. We have a whole host of animals who live here and BlissWood owner, Carol Davis, does great work to help animals in Texas with All Border Collie Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to finding forever homes for Border Collies.

If you remember the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia earlier this year, you probably recall hearing about their street dogs. Sochi’s abundance of stray dogs made the news during the Games, when authorities began rounding up and killing dogs. When the world caught wind of this terrible development, a number of animal rights groups stepped in to help save the dogs of Sochi.

Many Olympians joined in with the rescue efforts, taking home dogs themselves. Web sites popped up urging people around the world to help and save lives by adopting a dog from Sochi.

Carol Davis found Dog #153 on one such site. The site described him as a beautiful dog with a great personality. Many of his canine buddies from the streets of Sochi had already been rounded up and killed, but Dog #153 was caught by an animal rescue group. Carol took action and began the adoption process. It was a long process – it took months to make the arrangements and help from people on both ends but, in the end it all worked out for the best.

This lovable pup is now a world traveler. He finally made it all the way from Sochi, Russia to Houston, Texas. When all was said and done, he had flown 7,000 miles before arriving at Houston Intercontinental Airport.

Dog 153 is no longer a number. Now he goes by the name Stetson and he’s adjusted quite well to ranch life in Texas! Stetson is having a great time exploring the 600 acre ranch here at BlissWood and enjoying life. He’s one lucky dog!

All Border Collie Rescue’s Dancing for the Dogs

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

Everyone looks forward to the weekend, but we’re especially excited this week. We’ve got big plans! This Saturday, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch will join All Border Collie Rescue for a night of dinner and dancing. On June 7th, we’ll be attending “Dancing for the Dogs” at the Crystal Ballroom at the Rice Lofts in Houston.

The event will feature performances by world-class ballroom dancers, including Top 24 International Latin Competitors, Katia Kuznetsova and Cristiano Callegari! Attendees will even get a chance to see BlissWood owner and former competitive dancer Carol Davis take the floor with Cristiano Callegari!

Additionally, there will be performances by two canine musical freestyle teams from The Texas-Six Steppers dog freestyle dancing troupe. The evening’s emcee will be Shern-Min Chow, news anchor and reporter for Houston’s KHOU.

It will be a fun night, but it’s also for a great cause. All donations from the event will benefit All Border Collie Rescue. We love the work that All Border Collie Rescue does. They’re dedicated to caring for dogs in transition as they look for permanent homes. Since 2008, when All Border Collie Rescue was founded, they’ve rescued over 1000 dogs. BlissWood’s Carol Davis has personally fostered around 200 of those Collies!

Spring Calving Season at BlissWood

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

Blisswood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is more than your average B&B. We offer one-of-a-kind Texas guest ranch vacations here in Cat Spring, Texas. And as a working ranch, we’re also home to lots of animals, big and small. At this time of year, it seems like every time we turn around, we’re home to one more! Now that it’s spring, the baby calves are arriving.

Who can resist snapping some pictures of a mom with a newborn? Our resident photographer Skeeter Hagler managed to capture this special moment just after the birth of one of our calves.

Our owner, Carol Davis, has been raising cattle for years. In addition to Angus and Angus crossbreeds, she also raises American Bison here at BlissWood.

With over 650 acres, we have plenty of room for all kinds of beautiful creatures. And we do have all kinds. As well as common barnyard animals like cattle and chickens, you might also see black buck antelope, potbellied pigs, fallow deer, alpaca, and miniature donkeys. And if you take a stroll around the ranch, you’ll probably even come across a peacock or two.

When you stay at our Texas ranch, you have the chance to meet many of our animals on the morning feeding tour. The tour is open to all guests and it’s a unique treat for any animal lover. But the wildlife is just one of the many things that sets Blisswood Bed and Breakfast apart from other inns. With charming, historic accommodations and a wide variety of on-site activities, a stay at BlissWood is a true Texas adventure.

So if you’re looking for a different kind of getaway or if you’re interested in animals and life on a ranch, start planning your trip today! You can visit our website to check availability online or just give us a call at 713-301-3235.

All Border Collie Rescue

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

At BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch, animals are a big part of everyday life. You might say we have more than our fair share of them! We’re home to chickens, bison, antelope, fallow deer, potbellied pigs, peacocks, alpaca, and miniature donkeys. And in addition to all of those fine creatures, you’ll often find us with a Border Collie or two. (Or more.) But they don’t belong to us – we’re just helping out some of the sweet rescue dogs in Texas.

We’re proud to work with All Border Collie Rescue, caring for dogs in transition as they look for permanent homes. All Border Collie Rescue was founded in 2008, and in its first year in operation, it found homes for 25 lovable pups. Now, just a few years later, that number is reaching into the hundreds! At BlissWood, we’re happy to help as much and as often as we can.

All Border Collie Rescue is a volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue of Border Collies. They help to find homes for dogs from shelters throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and other neighboring states. They work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and match Border Collies with families who are right for them.

And we’ve got some wonderful news! Just last weekend one of our foster Border Collies was adopted! To celebrate the momentous occasion, we went out to take some photos in the bluebonnets. As you can see, Border Collies aren’t just smart – they’re photogenic too.

When you visit BlissWood, you might just end up bonding with some of our available fosters. If you’ve never met a Border Collie, you should know that they’re very smart and they learn quickly. A Border Collie makes for a great companion. They’re loyal to their owners and very capable, if you train them well. If you think there’s a chance that a Border Collie might fit into your life, please consider a rescue. They’re especially good pets for folks with active households.

Plan a visit to BlissWood today! You won’t necessarily leave with a new pet, but you never know…

Friends of BlissWood: Friends of the Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge

Friday, February 14th, 2014

We’re lucky to be part of a wonderful community here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. As a working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas, we have a great appreciation for the land and all the creatures who reside here. That’s why we’re so happy to partner with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge for the “Discover Your Prairie Neighbors” art contest!

Just 25 minutes from BlissWood, the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Refuge is one of the last remaining places to find the endangered prairie chicken. The Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge does excellent work in the community, providing opportunities that call attention to the prairie and all the species that call it home. They do great things for the community – animals and people alike. Through outreach and education, they work hard to preserve and restore the beautiful coastal prairie for all of us and for future generations.

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is pleased to team up with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge as a proud sponsor of the 2nd Annual Discover your Prairie Neighbors art contest. The contest is a fun opportunity for kids of all ages to learn more about the natural environment in Texas while also getting a chance to explore their creative side. The contest will be open through March 1st, 2014. Students at every level, from kindergarten to grade 12 in Brazos ISD, Columbus ISD, Rice CISD, and Sealy ISD, are encouraged to participate.

And if you’re looking for some inspiration, we’d love for parents and teachers to check out the lessons in the Kid Zone. Our hope is that your students will learn more about the prairie and its wildlife, which will, in turn, result in a greater appreciation for our environment and wildlife. We hope this art contest serves as inspiration to learn about the prairie and to have some fun with art!

For more information and contest rules, check out the entry forms available online. Have fun and get coloring!

Relaxing at BlissWood

Allison & Sassy Enjoying the Sunshine

This is Real Puppy Love!  A rare family that epitomizes real family values just ended their weekend at our Texas Guest Ranch.   There is real family love that one can feel when around them–both children wonderfully behaved, parents very caring and loving.  Alexis and Allison, you will be remembered! Allison obviously has this special connection with animals, and Sassy our ranch ambassador, quickly knew this and took advantage of it.   Allison is now famous here at BlissWood, and Sassy awaits her next visit.  Alexis and Allison took advantage of our children’s horseback riding and had a great time with our wonderful weather this weekend.  Upon their return home this evening. Mother Lori wrote:  “We are proud of the girls!  We had a great time this weekend; it was the first time for any of us to visit a ranch (except for school field trips).  We really loved riding our bikes and seeing all the animals up close.  Thank you so much for sending the photos as Allison was in tears that she didn’t see Sassy this morning.  We printed the pictures already.  Allison is taking them to school tomorrow – 1st grade.  It’s a great thing that you have done with Blisswood.”   This is what BlissWood is all about–getting unplugged, relaxing in nature, surrounded by our ranch animals.

Philosophooing

Roger says:  “Life is what you make of it.  Grab what you can while you can.  Heck, the chickens come around when I’m trying to eat my banana; if I drop a bite, they are there to peck it up quickly.  One must always be vigilent.  Grab it first with no hesitation.”  Life on a Texas Guest Ranch.

New Family Member at our Texas Bed and Breakfast

Friday, December 19th, 2008

We are so excited to have a new member of the Blisswood family! Welcome “Joey”, our baby Kangaroo! We are so excited to have this little guy at the ranch and think he will be a new star around here!

This little guy is only 6 months old!Right now little Joey (we haven’t picked out a name for him yet) is a lot like a little human baby: he wears diapers and likes to be held often. I carry him in a big diaper bag, to reproduce the experience of a pouch. He just likes to sleep a lot and is extremely cute! People just fall in love with him when they see him! I hope he will get along with the dogs, cats, horses, miniature donkeys, peacocks, bison and camel that already live at Lehmann Legacy Ranch.

You can see from the pictures how powerful his back legs will become! It will be fun to see him grow as the months pass! I hope you can come out to our Texas Bed and Breakfast soon and meet the new family member!

A 6 pounds, he's just like a little baby!
