Historic Texas

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

Texas is a great state with a rich history. Located in lovely Texas Hill Country, our ranch in Cat Spring is just one of the many charming stops you might make on a historic tour of Texas.

Take a look at Sealy, Texas, if you will. Formed as a railroad town in 1879, our neighbors in the nearby city of Sealy recently received a Texas Main Street Program Grant. The grant was presented by Anita Perry, wife of Texas Governor Rick Perry. Along with a friend, BlissWood owner Carol Davis had the privilege of presenting the Texas and US colors on horseback.

Sealy was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in the Texas Main Street Program. The goal of the TMSP is “to provide technical expertise, resources and support for Texas communities in the preservation and revitalization of historic downtowns and commercial neighborhood districts in accord with the National Main Street Four Point Approach® of organization, economic restructuring, design and promotion.”

Across the great state of Texas, there are 84 official Texas Main Street communities. The program works with towns and cities of every size, ranging in population from 2,000 to over 200,000. And all that work is paying off. Texas Main Street communities have seen significant reinvestment into their historic downtowns.

It’s extremely important to support and invest in the downtown areas of our Texas cities. Downtown revitalization is key when it comes to preserving the economic and social health of a community. A well-preserved historic downtown is part of any city’s charm. It’s also a valuable source of cultural heritage.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact the program will have on the beautiful city of Sealy, and we’re honored to have been a part of it! Next time you take a trip to BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch, be sure to stop by Sealy!

Pay a Visit to Cat Spring, Texas!

Friday, March 21st, 2014

Extra! Extra! Read all about us! We’ve always known that we’re one of the hidden gems in Texas, but it’s nice to get a little recognition from the media. We’re so pleased to be featured in a story about Cat Spring, Texas in the upcoming issue of Texas Highways magazine. Writer Stephen Dean paid a visit to our ranch and you can read all about his experience in the April issue of Texas Highways.

Mr. Dean stayed in the Oasis Retreat, our tropical getaway within a country getaway. The Oasis at BlissWood houses a variety of cottages, suites, and rooms. It’s also home to our greenhouses and orchid gardens. When you stay at the Oasis, you get to experience two very different sides of BlissWood. Located just down the road from our main ranch, the Oasis has a totally different feel with its more modern, Asian aesthetic. It’s hard to believe you’re still in Texas Hill Country!

And when you stay at BlissWood’s Oasis, you can still enjoy all the activities our ranch has to offer. Guests of the Oasis leave their tropical retreat and join us for horseback riding, bass fishing, and even skeet shooting! It’s truly a getaway like none other!

Of course, when Mr. Dean was here, we wanted him to see all sides of BlissWood. He stayed in the Cherry Blossom Suite, but we made sure he saw the entire property. Skeeter Hagler, our resident photographer, did the honor of showing him around. Because it’s not a complete visit to BlissWood unless you meet the animals! They said hello to the Paso Fino horses as well as our bison, alpaca, miniature donkeys, and antelope.

And dinner at Carol’s Restaurant is a must for any visitor. Stephen joined us for a friendly dinner where he got a home-cooked meal and plenty of great conversation. Carol’s at Cat Spring is the ideal setting for kicking back, chatting with some locals, and enjoying a fine meal in a laid-back atmosphere.

Check out the magazine and get inspired to plan your own visit to BlissWood!

Friends of BlissWood: Friends of the Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge

Friday, February 14th, 2014

We’re lucky to be part of a wonderful community here at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. As a working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas, we have a great appreciation for the land and all the creatures who reside here. That’s why we’re so happy to partner with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge for the “Discover Your Prairie Neighbors” art contest!

Just 25 minutes from BlissWood, the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Refuge is one of the last remaining places to find the endangered prairie chicken. The Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge does excellent work in the community, providing opportunities that call attention to the prairie and all the species that call it home. They do great things for the community – animals and people alike. Through outreach and education, they work hard to preserve and restore the beautiful coastal prairie for all of us and for future generations.

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is pleased to team up with the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge as a proud sponsor of the 2nd Annual Discover your Prairie Neighbors art contest. The contest is a fun opportunity for kids of all ages to learn more about the natural environment in Texas while also getting a chance to explore their creative side. The contest will be open through March 1st, 2014. Students at every level, from kindergarten to grade 12 in Brazos ISD, Columbus ISD, Rice CISD, and Sealy ISD, are encouraged to participate.

And if you’re looking for some inspiration, we’d love for parents and teachers to check out the lessons in the Kid Zone. Our hope is that your students will learn more about the prairie and its wildlife, which will, in turn, result in a greater appreciation for our environment and wildlife. We hope this art contest serves as inspiration to learn about the prairie and to have some fun with art!

For more information and contest rules, check out the entry forms available online. Have fun and get coloring!

Central Texas Antique Stores

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Shopping for antiques, like going to garage sales, isn’t everybody’s idea of a good time. But for those of us who enjoy the doggedness of the hunt and the thrill of the find, there is little better. If that sounds like you, consider spending a few days at our Central Texas Bed and Breakfast while antiquing in nearby towns.

Mustang Alley - a local treasure.

About ten miles northeast of Cat Spring, Bellville TX is home to Nothing Ordinary Antiques, Cottonwood Cottage, and Antiques Etc Emporium, all within a few blocks of each other. Nothing Ordinary is located in an early 1900’s auto dealership, and upon entering it is clear that the walls house something special. The space is large – nearly 8,000 square feet – so perseverance and energy are required. This is a good place to find Victorian beadwork, Majolica from England, Europe and Japan, and lovely lace and linens.

About ten miles southeast of Cat Spring, Sealy TX is home to Bitter Weeds Antiques, Stokes Antiques, Four w Co, and Hradil Auction Co. & Antiques. Hradil’s puts on auctions and estate sales every other Sunday – a great place to find all sorts of unexpected and unusual items.

Cat Spring’s local treasure is Mustang Alley, located in an old general store close to Carol’s fine dining restaurant. Here you’ll find everything from antiques to jewelry, along with an impressive selection of Brazilian cowhides.

Antique hunters should enjoy lodging at our Central Texas guest cabins, since they are furnished with antiques. Poke around nearby antique stores by day, and sleep on a comfortable antique bed at night.

Central Texas Guest Ranch is a Gem

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Guests of our Central Texas Vacation ranch sometimes have the opportunity to watch cowboys and cowgirls at work. Below you can see our herd of purebred Angus being rounded up. This time we used a jeep and a golf cart; other times we use horses.

Our Houston area cabins are situated on a 600-acre ranch, meaning there is plenty of room to roam. Guests may watch us at work, participate in a morning feed tour, or simply relax on the porch in the shade.

“One word: Wow! We chose the Enchanted Cabin for our stay as I wanted something secluded and away from everyone else. This is EXACTLY what we got. In fact, when we drove down the road (with darling little handmade signs) we got to the end and my husband said, “Where is it?” The cabin was so nestled we barely saw it. (more…)
