Historic Texas

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

Texas is a great state with a rich history. Located in lovely Texas Hill Country, our ranch in Cat Spring is just one of the many charming stops you might make on a historic tour of Texas.

Take a look at Sealy, Texas, if you will. Formed as a railroad town in 1879, our neighbors in the nearby city of Sealy recently received a Texas Main Street Program Grant. The grant was presented by Anita Perry, wife of Texas Governor Rick Perry. Along with a friend, BlissWood owner Carol Davis had the privilege of presenting the Texas and US colors on horseback.

historic tour of Texas

Sealy was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in the Texas Main Street Program. The goal of the TMSP is “to provide technical expertise, resources and support for Texas communities in the preservation and revitalization of historic downtowns and commercial neighborhood districts in accord with the National Main Street Four Point Approach® of organization, economic restructuring, design and promotion.”

Across the great state of Texas, there are 84 official Texas Main Street communities. The program works with towns and cities of every size, ranging in population from 2,000 to over 200,000. And all that work is paying off. Texas Main Street communities have seen significant reinvestment into their historic downtowns.

It’s extremely important to support and invest in the downtown areas of our Texas cities. Downtown revitalization is key when it comes to preserving the economic and social health of a community. A well-preserved historic downtown is part of any city’s charm. It’s also a valuable source of cultural heritage.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact the program will have on the beautiful city of Sealy, and we’re honored to have been a part of it! Next time you take a trip to BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch, be sure to stop by Sealy!

Bluebonnets in Bloom at BlissWood!

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014

We’re happy to report that spring is in full swing at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch! And now that we’re enjoying some warmer temperatures, we’re also seeing a beautiful crop of bluebonnets on the ranch. All the rain we’ve had this year has certainly paid off! Plan your visit to Texas Hill Country and we’ll show you some of the best wildflowers in Texas.

Named for their color and, some say, a likeness to the bonnets worn by pioneer women, the bluebonnet is the official state flower of Texas. The bluebonnet was designated the official state flower in 1901. However, the original legislation mentioned only the species of lupinus subcarnosus. 70 years later it was amended to include lupinus texensis as well as “any other variety of bluebonnet not heretofore recorded.” That means that all species of bluebonnets are considered our state flower. There are currently at least 5 species of bluebonnets growing in Texas, so you might say that we have a whole bouquet of state flowers. It just goes to show that Texans take our bluebonnets very seriously!

The bluebonnet is a lovely harbinger of spring here in Texas. They often begin to bloom in early March. And once they do, you won’t have trouble spotting them in fields and along the highways in central and south Texas. Even our Department of Transportation works to help maintain and protect the iconic flowers.

If you enjoy nature photography, spring is a wonderful time to plan a trip to Texas Hill Country. Grab your camera and join us at BlissWood! And if you’re planning a spring wedding for next year, just imagine the gorgeous pictures you could take with a backdrop of bluebonnets.

Bluebonnet season usually lasts through April. Give us a call at 713-301-3235 and we’ll tell you if they’re still in bloom!

wedding venues in Texas Hill Country

When you plan a wedding, you want a venue that will photograph well. BlissWood is the absolute ideal setting for your outdoor wedding photography. We have a wonderful variety of locations and different types of scenery on our ranch. Here, brides can choose from intimate gardens, romantic vineyards, and lush meadows.

We have a long tradition of weddings here at BlissWood. The Enchanted Lake and gazebo were designed with a wedding in mind. We believe it was all built in preparation for the wedding of a previous owner’s daughter. And today, it’s one of our most popular wedding locations. Many couples choose to say their vows at the gazebo on the Enchanted Lake.

We also do weddings in our gardens and at our nearby tropical Oasis. There’s a lot that goes into planning a wedding, and there’s a lot to consider when choosing a venue. Our owner, Carol Davis, was recently featured in an online article about turning your property into a wedding venue. Check it out if you’re interested in all that goes into hosting a wedding!

And if you’re interested in having your wedding at BlissWood, give us a call today at 713-301-3235. We’d love to tell you more and make plans to show you around!

Pay a Visit to Cat Spring, Texas!

Friday, March 21st, 2014

Extra! Extra! Read all about us! We’ve always known that we’re one of the hidden gems in Texas, but it’s nice to get a little recognition from the media. We’re so pleased to be featured in a story about Cat Spring, Texas in the upcoming issue of Texas Highways magazine. Writer Stephen Dean paid a visit to our ranch and you can read all about his experience in the April issue of Texas Highways.

Screen Shot 2014-03-21 at 9.55.13 AM

Mr. Dean stayed in the Oasis Retreat, our tropical getaway within a country getaway. The Oasis at BlissWood houses a variety of cottages, suites, and rooms. It’s also home to our greenhouses and orchid gardens. When you stay at the Oasis, you get to experience two very different sides of BlissWood. Located just down the road from our main ranch, the Oasis has a totally different feel with its more modern, Asian aesthetic. It’s hard to believe you’re still in Texas Hill Country!

And when you stay at BlissWood’s Oasis, you can still enjoy all the activities our ranch has to offer. Guests of the Oasis leave their tropical retreat and join us for horseback riding, bass fishing, and even skeet shooting! It’s truly a getaway like none other!

Of course, when Mr. Dean was here, we wanted him to see all sides of BlissWood. He stayed in the Cherry Blossom Suite, but we made sure he saw the entire property. Skeeter Hagler, our resident photographer, did the honor of showing him around. Because it’s not a complete visit to BlissWood unless you meet the animals! They said hello to the Paso Fino horses as well as our bison, alpaca, miniature donkeys, and antelope.

And dinner at Carol’s Restaurant is a must for any visitor. Stephen joined us for a friendly dinner where he got a home-cooked meal and plenty of great conversation. Carol’s at Cat Spring is the ideal setting for kicking back, chatting with some locals, and enjoying a fine meal in a laid-back atmosphere.

Check out the magazine and get inspired to plan your own visit to BlissWood!

Unplug at Our Texas Hill Country Bed and Breakfast

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

“Unplug’’ used to mean switching off the radio and turning off the TV. These days, many of us feel inundated by the constant barrage of information from our smartphones and other devices. That’s why it’s important to unplug from time to time – to go low-tech or no-tech for a weekend.

Blisswood – a Texas Hill Country bed and breakfast on a working ranch an hour west of Houston, Texas, is a great place to rest, relax, renew the spirit, and be present. Connect with our natural surroundings instead of your Facebook friends and Twitter followers!

These pictured friends and guests came from the city to our Texas Hill Country to “unplug” for a weekend. They stayed at the Lanai House at Blisswood’s Oasis, our sister property. The Lanai House features one bedroom, a large living area overlooking waterfall and pond, a bathroom with jacuzzi tub and a fully equipped kitchen. The one thing it doesn’t have is a TV!

Among the things guests can do to “unplug” at Blisswood:

Ride a horse. Saddle up and enjoy a horseback ride. Spread over 650 acres, there is plenty of scenery to take in. All rides are guided, and the cost is $69 per guest for a one-hour ride. Visit the Activities at the Ranch section of our website for age restrictions and other information.

Take a walk or hike. You might catch a glimpse of grazing deer or a herd of American bison. Animals abound on the ranch. Besides horses (naturally!), you might also see miniature donkeys and peacocks.

Enjoy catch-and-release bass fishing.  Fishing enthusiasts can catch-and-release bass in the ranch’s stocked lakes. If you bring your own gear, the cost is $29 per person for 3 hours. If you need to rent gear, the cost is $49 per person for 3 hours.

Have a picnic. Give us a call, and we’ll be happy to make arrangements and pack a picnic for you to enjoy at the Gazebo at Enchanted Lake, or elsewhere on our property.

Dine at Carol’s at Cat Spring Restaurant. The dress is casual, the mood is country, and the menu and food are classy. If you like Texas beef, you’ve come to the right place. Carol’s also offers chops, seafood and pasta – something for every taste and craving.

Explore Cat Spring. Cat Spring, in Austin County, is one of the first German/American settlements in Texas. History abounds here, and opportunities for “retail therapy’’ include several antiques shops. Learn more at the official Cat Spring website.

Treat yourself to a massage. In-room massages are available – all we ask is that you make arrangements in advance. Please visit the Weekend Getaways in Texas – Specials & Packages section of our website or call for more detailed information.

Essayist, novelist, and travel writer Pico Iyer has said of our busy lives: “The more ways we have to connect, the more many of us seem desperate to unplug.’’

Are you ready to unplug for a weekend? Visit our website to Check Availability Online or give us a call today at 713-301-3235. We’re happy to answer questions you have about Blisswood and help with arrangements.

Newly Engaged Couple at Carol’s Restaurant: Photo by Skeeter Hagler

This couple got engaged recently at Carol’s Restaurant. They met on an online dating site for Christian singles in April and quickly fell in love, according to Blisswood owner Carol Davis.

He surprised her by suggesting dinner in the country, and then surprised her again with an engagement ring.

Carol’s Restaurant is the perfect place for those in the mood for love – and for a memorable meal. The restaurant’s interior is Texas country, with appointments in cedar and cowhide. Tables are topped with white linens and votive candles, giving the room a warm glow. The menu offers Texas favorites like steaks and chops, as well as sophisticated seafood and pasta offerings.

As for the couple who got engaged at Carol’s: He is a Harley rider and his fiancé is learning to share his enjoyment of motorcycle riding.

“Oh, what love makes you do,’’ says Blisswood’s Carol Davis.

The couple is considering having their wedding at Blisswood Bed and Breakfast.

With its multiple cabins and cottages, Blisswood Bed and Breakfast offers several accommodations in a relaxing oasis on a 650-acre working ranch in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. We offer several “proposal packages.’’

One, designed for guests staying with us, includes a picture-perfect setting — and much more: Couples enjoy a guided horseback ride to Enchanted Lake; chilled Champagne and souvenir glasses waiting in the Gazebo; chocolate-covered strawberries and fresh flowers. After she (or he) says yes, a golf cart will whisk you back to your lodging. Prices start at $239 per couple, plus the cost of accommodations.

Our proposal package for non-guests includes flowers; chocolate-covered strawberries; cheese and crackers; and Champagne with souvenir glasses. The fee is $199 per couple, and includes the use of the Gazebo at Enchanted Lake.

All you have to bring is the ring!

Visit our website for perfect Weekend Getaways in Texas or give us a call today at 713-301-3235. We would be delighted to help you plan your proposal and make your engagement something to remember for the rest of your lives.

Texas Elopement PackagesWeddings take considerable time and effort to plan, and many brides and grooms don’t want to say “I Do’’ to the stresses and pressures involved. Let’s elope, they say. Let’s avoid the hassles of planning a wedding.

To the rescue: all-inclusive Texas elopement packages offered and perfected at our Texas Hill Country Wedding Venue.

Our Romantic Texas Hill Country Bed and Breakfast is situated on a 650-acre working ranch an hour west of Houston in Cat Spring, Texas. With the Texas Hill Country as a backdrop, it’s a perfect setting for elopements, Texas weddings, or a simple romantic weekend getaway.

Richard and Joy didn’t have much time to plan a wedding. The bride is a nurse with the Air Force, serving in Afghanistan. BlissWood took care of all the elopement details: the flowers, the ceremony, the cake, the romantic accommodations.

The couple was married October 6, 2012, in an intimate ceremony at the Gazebo at Enchanted Lake. They exchanged their vows before BlissWood owner Carol Davis, who is also an ordained minister.

They enjoyed champagne, a gourmet dinner at Carol’s Restaurant, a Cat Spring Favorite, and a “tropical’’ mini honeymoon at Kit’s Bungalow, one of the options nearby at The Oasis at BlissWood. The Oasis is a tropical setting among the rolling prairies of Texas Hill Country. It truly is an oasis, with a waterfall, orchids in bloom and scenting the air and a small, unheated pool.

Skeeter Hagler, BlissWood’s official photographer and Pulitzer Prize Winner, captured many moments of the couple’s idyllic elopement, which they will have for the rest of their lives.

A wedding at BlissWood – from intimate elopements for two to elaborate events for dozens of guests – is an affair to remember.

“Just roaming around the ranch was wonderful, but the highlights of our trip were dinner at Carol’s Restaurant, the morning horseback ride and the unbelievable photo shoot with Skeeter (Hagler). …The staff was helpful and engaging and made us feel right at home.
