We’re happy to report that spring is in full swing at BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch! And now that we’re enjoying some warmer temperatures, we’re also seeing a beautiful crop of bluebonnets on the ranch. All the rain we’ve had this year has certainly paid off! Named for their color and, some say, a likeness to the bonnets worn by pioneer women, the bluebonnet is the official state flower of Texas. The bluebonnet was designated the official state flower in 1901. However, the original legislation mentioned only the species of lupinus subcarnosus. 70 years later it was amended to include lupinus texensis as well as “any other variety of bluebonnet not heretofore recorded.” That means that all species of bluebonnets are considered our state flower. There are currently at least 5 species of bluebonnets growing in Texas, so you might say that we have a whole bouquet of state flowers. It just goes to show that Texans take our bluebonnets very seriously!
The bluebonnet is a lovely harbinger of spring here in Texas. They often begin to bloom in early March. And once they do, you won’t have trouble spotting them in fields and along the highways in central and south Texas. Even our Department of Transportation works to help maintain and protect the iconic flowers.
